Mark 1:23-24 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." 

These verses describe the first recorded incident that Jesus encountered when he entered a place for a religious service. Instantly a 'demoniac' or 'unclean spirit' manifested itself and cried out. The man would have been demonized by the devil and was definitely not in his right mind. He would have been driven mad with hatred against God and this is why he became so hostile towards Jesus. There was also mention of him recognizing Jesus as the son of God which means that his sanity was intact.

Romans 5:8-9 says, "But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from eternal condemnation. Romans 5:8-9 reminds us that God shows great love for us, as sinful human beings, through Jesus' sacrifice. This provides us eternal hope and a way to have an individual relationship with Him. Saint Benedict, the founder of the Benedictine monastic order, emphasized the importance of Lenten observance in his Rule for Monasteries. Here are some of the practices he recommended: 1.
